Hunter Army Airfield firefighters and Marines from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort worked to put together a training situation using an aircraft firefighting simulator designed for practicing rescue and firefighting operations. Fire training simulators allow firefighters to re-create different emergency scenarios such as large-scale external fuel spill, wing, engine and tail fires. They can also help to develop realistic internal rescue scenarios for seat, cockpit, cabin and cargo fires. Fire training simulators also offer flexibility for the right training activity while providing maximum safety at all times. This specially designed aircraft hull is known as a Mobile Aircraft Firefighting Training Device, or MAFTD.
“We have the one job that no one wants us to have to do our
job,” Powell said. “But we’ve got to make sure that we’re trained to the upmost
level if we’re ever called upon to do it, and this (MAFTD) device prepares us
in expeditionary manner to be able to get there and perform a mission.”
