DOUGLAS, AZ- An F-16 from the 162nd Fighter Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard crashed Wednesday night close to Arizona's border with New Mexico, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft was on a night training mission with one person on board, according to officials.
The 162nd Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard said in a statement.
There was no early information about the pilot's fate.
The 162nd said the pilot was the only person on board when the aircraft went down five miles east of Douglas Municipal Airport. The area is near Arizona's border with both Mexico and New Mexico.
The crash sparked a brush fire that was burning next to a high-pressure gas line.
Homes in the vicinity were evacuated. The fire is said to be up to a half mile long. "Multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agencies were assisting in providing a two-mile perimeter to preserve the crash site. Aircraft parts were strewn in the area."
