COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Authorities say two people were killed in a small plane crash near the Colorado Springs airport.

The Gazette reports the private plane crashed after takeoff Monday morning near nearby Peterson Air Force Base, setting off a small grass fire. The victims' names and ages have not been released.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the pilot of the Cirrus SR22 reported a loss of engine power just before the airplane went down in a field.

The crash temporarily shut down one of the Air Force base's gates. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
