At Least One Killed in Crash Involving German Train, Towed US Military Vehicle

GRAFENWÖHR, Germany -- On November 5, 2015, at approximately 2240 hours, a Deutsche Bahn commuter train, traveling between Nuremberg and Weiden, Germany, struck a civilian semi-truck that was transporting a military vehicle belonging to the U.S. Army's 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

The collision occurred near the town of Freihung, located 17 km away from Tower Barracks in Grafenwoehr.

At this time, we are aware of at least one non-U.S. military fatality along with multiple other civilian injuries, and we offer our sincere condolences to the families of those affected by this tragedy.

There were no U.S. Military personnel on scene at the time of the collision and none of the vehicles involved were carrying hazardous materials or ammunition.

All U.S. equipment and personnel have returned to Tower Barracks, and despite the significant damage to the transport and train, there were no U.S. Military injuries and only minimal damage to the U.S. property.

The incident is under investigation and we will assist the German authorities who are in control of the scene.
