“Street Smart” was presented by the members of Stay Alive From Education, a Florida based organization comprised of current and retired firefighters and paramedics who travel the world hosting the event for military members.
During the presentation paramedics lead a discussion about the importance of making smart decisions and practicing safe driving, to prevent motor vehicle accidents and possible resulting injuries and deaths.
“People don’t think that anything like this can happen to them,” said Ralph Jimenez, retired fire fighter and paramedic out of Tampa, Fla. “It’s not like the movies. People are injured severely—some never leave the scene because they are dead. This is what can happen to you should you make the poor choices we talk about.”
The prominent portion of the presentation involves an audience member getting on-stage to be guided through simulated results of making poor choices that can lead to a motor vehicle accident.
“The number one cause of fatalities within the Department of Defense and the Air Force is vehicle traffic accidents,” said Robert Clapp, 22nd ARW safety office occupational safety manager. “If we can save just one of our Airmen from being a statistic this holiday, all of our time and effort put into this presentation was worth it.”
With winter weather conditions approaching, making smart decisions during the holiday season will help ensure that all of Team McConnell is safe and that our Airmen are at their fullest capacity to tackle the mission.
“These are preventable accidents,” said Greg McCarty, retired fire fighter and paramedic out of Miami. “We want to give back a little something and try to save military lives so that they can continue to protect ours.”
