Firefighters at Fire Station No. 1 received a visit from Fort Stewart garrison commander Col. Jason Wolter on July 19 for their successful efforts in fighting a structural fire that took place recently at an on-post residence.

Assistant Chief James Ashdown, Capt. Jordan Chancey, Capt. Matthew Pearce, Inspector Wayne Reinhardt, and firefighters Leonard Washinski, Alan Carson, Jesse Poole, and Spc. White each had a hand in successfully completing the mission and received a coin to commemorate their achievement.

This structural fire was especially challenging because it already reached a portion of the home’s attic. It did not take long for firefighter Poole to realize the fire was going to be formidable. The rest of the crew arrived, worked together and completed the task.

Poole credits his company for working together to get the job done. “It tested their skills,” Poole said. “I was among the first to arrive on the scene then the rest of the team showed up and took care of business.”
Wolter expressed his gratitude to the group for their commitment to public safety and affirmed their critical role in everyday life on the installation.

“Other than our deployed Soldiers, law enforcement, and firefighters do the most important jobs (to keep us safe),” Wolter said.
Wolter also took the opportunity to recognize, soon-to-be-retired Ashdown for 26 years of dedicated service to Fort Stewart.
