Capt. Christopher Dunbar and SSgt Alexander Miyagi, with the 244th Medical Group in the New York Guard, CPR certified 105th Airlift Wing Airmen at Stewart Air National Guard Base Feb. 9, 2019.

Airmen were taught and certified in CPR and Helmick Maneuver basics on both adults and children.

“It’s a lifesaving skill,” said Dunbar. ”You just never know when you’re going to use it.”

The New York Guard is a volunteer group of members that assist New York National Guard components, contributing manpower and experience for mission support.

“Different members of the New York Guard come to Stewart to qualify airman almost every month, many having day jobs as doctors, physician assistants, medics, firefighters and police officers,” said Dunbar.

Besides just learning the procedures, Airmen learn the importance of assessing and responding in a timely manner.

“If you don’t start doing CPR within a minute or two chances of survival go down” said Miaygai.

Tech. Sgt. Joseph Fitzsimmons crew chief with the 105th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron attended the CPR certification course along with 14 other Airmen.

The instructors were very knowledgeable, it’s the first time I ever seen how to preform CPR on a child and baby, said Fitzsimmons.

Dunbar and Miaygai have been coming to Stewart Air National Guard Base to teach CPR Classes for about a year.
