Roland completes military aviation career with final flight


Story by July 27, 2022 at 10:19AM Water droplets fell upon the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter as Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joseph Roland taxied for the last time as a military aviator. Exiting the cockpit, Roland gave a wave of gratitude to dozens of family members and colleagues as he stepped out of his first airframe, for the final time. He gave a hearty “thank you” to the fire department for supporting the “Wash Ceremony,” which is a time-honored tradition where an arch of water washes over the helicopter as the crew taxies together for the last time at Stewart Air Base on July 15.

Volunteer firefighters hone skills at Fort Drum FES training facility


Story by Michael Strasser July 26, 2022 at 12:03PM Sounds of chainsaws tearing into wood and pry bars forcing open a metal doorway echoed into the evening while local volunteer firefighters practiced their tradecraft July 21 at the Fort Drum Fire and Emergency Services’ training facility. Fourteen trainees from several Jefferson County fire departments are attending the Interior Firefighting Operations Course, provided by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC).
