Capt. William Havener, a pilot with the 174th Tactical Fighter Group in Syracuse, was killed in a training accident at Fort Drum on Oct. 5, 1974, when his plane went down due to mechanical failure. The decorated Vietnam War veteran had a lifelong love for flying.

I vividly remember emailing my family about being exhausted and excited to come home to some home-cooked food and mid-way through writing my email, I hear the bells go off for a class bravo fire [fuel fire] in the ship’s upper vehicle stowage.”
