Soldier dies in incident at Army’s Joint Training Readiness Center

Army officials announced that a soldier died Saturday during a training incident at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Louisiana.

1st Lt. Zachary Galli, who was assigned to the 749th Ordnance Company, 242nd Explosive Ordnance Battalion, 71st EOD Group at Fort Carson, Colorado, died in a noncombat related training accident, base officials said in a release Monday.

Galli, 23, was an explosive ordnance disposal officer from Williamsburg, Virginia.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of 1st Lt. Zachary Galli,” said Col. Brennan Fitzgerald, commander of the 71st EOD Group, in a release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the Galli family, the 749th EOD Co., and the greater EOD community.”

The unit was at the Fort Johnson, Louisiana center for a training rotation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the soldier’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” said the Commanding General of JRTC and Fort Johnson, Maj. Gen. David W. Gardner, in a separate statement.

The training center is one of two major combat training centers used by soldiers for unit certification and pre-deployment training. The other is the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California.

The accident is under investigation.

Air Force instructor pilot dies after ejection seat activates during ground operations

 

    An Air Force instructor pilot died Tuesday morning from injuries sustained after an ejection seat activated during ground operations Monday afternoon. 

The pilot was with the 80th Flying Training Wing at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. The Air Force is withholding the pilot's name until family members have been notified. 

According to the base, the incident occurred around 1:55 p.m. on Monday, when the ejection seat of the trainer aircraft, a T-6A Texan II, activated during ground operations. 

The pilot was transported to United Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas, before succumbing to injuries sustained during the accident. 

The Air Force is conducting an investigation into the incident. 

According to the Air Force, this aircraft is a single-engine, two-seat trainer designed to train students in basic flying skills required of Air Force and Navy pilots. 

The 80th Training Flying Wing at Sheppard Air Force Base leads the multinational Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) Program that trains combat pilots for NATO.

Coast Guard rescues 5 boaters in under 3 hours near Tampa Bay

Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders received a distress call through VHF radio channel 16 around 11:13 a.m. from four men aboard a sinking 24-foot boat near Gandy Bridge. A Station St. Petersburg boat crew recovered all four men next to their partially submerged and aground vessel and transported them to Gandy Boat Ramp.
