Air National Guard Firefighter Dies After Falling Ill During House Fire

An Air National Guard firefighter has passed away after officials say he was sickened while helping put out a house fire in Stanly County.

Captain Alan Hicks' body was found in the bedroom of Station 27 early Monday morning after returning from a late night fire along the 39000-block of Kemp Road in Albemarle. He was 44 years old.

According to the Air National Guard, Capt. Hicks and another firefighter were called out to the fire Sunday night to help assist crews on scene. They took a water tanker to the scene.

Once there, officials say crews needed additional help inside the home and Capt. Hicks was part of that crew.

Firefighters eventually evacuated the home after conditions inside became too dangerous.

According to ANG officials, Capt. Hicks became sickened at the scene with nausea and vomiting. About an hour later, he reportedly said that he was feeling better.

That's when Capt. Hicks and the other firefighter returned to the station and went to bed.

Monday morning, the other firefighter couldn't find Capt. Hicks and went into his bedroom to check on him. That's where he found Capt. Hicks unresponsive around 7:30 a.m.

The firefighter attempted to resuscitate him using CPR, but Capt. Hicks was unable to be saved.

According to the Air National Guard, Capt. Hicks has been active with the group since July 2010. He lived in Cabarrus County.

His body was sent to Medical Examiner's Office to determine the official cause of death.
